Upcoming Art Show - WomanMade:NWA

I have had an opportunity this year to be part of a women's art show called WomanMade:NWA that opens April 18, 2016.

I've been working on two distinct sides - first as the one who proposed, crafted, and helped curate the show, but also on the artist end - participating as a painter and creating a piece that will be shown alongside the other women artists.
 ---------------
We asked the artists to submit a piece that represented their “signature” creative work. Optionally, it could include or explore a topic, symbol, or idea that comes from a uniquely female perspective.

I chose the latter and created a painting called Flower Portrait (Woman) shown below.  More about the painting in the next post.

In the Studio: How a Painting is Packed & Shipped

I often get asked how a painting is packed and shipped.

Here are a few pictures showing the packing process for a mediums size canvas (36"x36") that was sent to a buyer directly from my studio.

Larger painting canvases are picked up by Freighters & Craters at my studio.   They take care of building a custom crate for the artwork & then take care of the shipping & delivery...and are lovely to work with! :)

These are the wooden crates that I have made for shipping paintings - pre-lined with white foam. I'm adding an extra layer of cheerful green bubble wrap! 💚

If I can fit it safely around the painting in the crate - I add a bow so it will feel like opening a present when it arrives! :)

Studio Sketches

Mid-afternoon in the studio, I decided to do some painted sketches and take a break from the giant painting I am working on.

I am really procrastinating...and need to get back to work! 😊

iPhone Sketches: Wildflowers #2

More wildflower iPhone sketches.  The lacy white & green flowers are really amazing if you look at them up close.

Late night in the Studio

I have been working all weekend in the studio getting ready for the show.
A late night shot…pardon the dark lighting.  And of course, Delta decided to stroll
by at the exact moment I was taking a photo.  :)

In the Studio: Work in Progress

At the end of the day in the studio, I always try to take the time and look at the
pieces I've been working on.   I started this painting several months ago
and decided to bring it back out and work on it this week.  Debating whether
this piece will be part of my upcoming show.

Turning the canvas helps me to see the piece from a different
perspective and helps me to determine what the next steps will be.

Delta came to join me! :)

In the Studio: Flower Power

Flowers = happiness.  My friend gave me an amazing bouquet as a gift  and I
started obsessing about the colors as soon as I laid eyes on it.  It was drenched with
an amazing range of pinks & purples with a perfect citron green thrown in.  Of course I
dragged the flowers out to the studio to use as a color reference.

Great Things Happen in American Garages :)

I love the 2014 Cadillac commercial that tells how the humble garage was a launchpad for many great start-ups.   Since my painting studio is a modified garage, I thought it appropriate to share the video.

Here is a peek into my studio:

We added a second movable wall this year. Yay! It's always great
having the extra space to paint and comfortable seats to
sit and look at works in progress.  (If I have wet paint on my
pants, which is often, you might see me sitting
on an overturned bucket instead. :)

Love my art garage. :)

Commission Update & Construction Photos

Wow!  I was able to walk through the new contemporary worship center for Grace Point Church in Bentonville, AR last week where my large painting will be installed in a few weeks.

The building is in the final stages of construction. It is hard to tell from the photos how large and airy the space actually is...floor to ceiling glass panels and soaring ceilings, it is just flooded with natural light.  Simply beautiful!

I have been working long hours in the studio painting, but this baby is almost finished!  Like 97% done.  I'm thinking 3 more full days of painting to do the final touches.  Yippee!

We, I mean my super-handy husband, is installing the hanging cleats on the canvases this weekend.  Will post some photos of him in action.
